Cape
Ann Social Club
The Cape Ann Social Club is a community based program for emotionally challenged adults of the North Shore of Boston. It is an evening and weekend program, open Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays from 5:00-9:00pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00-8:00pm. The program helps members acquire and maintain physical, cognitive, and social skills necessary to enrich lives and achieve personal goals. The club is a place to develop the kind of long-lasting friendships that build confidence and self-esteem.
The club staff encourages members to develop independent living skills through menu planning, shopping for food/household items, food prepping/cooking, and maintaining a safe, orderly environment. Self-determination and freedom of choice are key elements at weekly membership meetings, during which members plan and evaluate the program and develop policies.
Members enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including board games, art, crafts, piano, high speed Internet access, basketball, tennis, nature hikes, cookouts, holiday dinner parties, and field trips.
Club community service projects include visiting nursing homes, elderly day programs, and one residential program for mothers and their children at Christmas time. Members sometimes volunteer their time to prepare Open Door meals for the poor and hungry of Gloucester. They also participate annually in the Gloucester Pride Stride, a walk-a-thon to raise money for non-profit organizations, such as this one. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the club offers to the public a series of guest speakers who promote a healthy mental outlook.
Referrals come from the Department of Mental Health case managers, H.E.S. and other service providers, therapists, self, or family. Funding for the club is provided by the Department of Mental Health, and priority for acceptance is given to those who are DMH eligible. Participation in the club is completely voluntary, based upon each member's interests and rehabilitative goals.
