Special Programming

Wind Rush Farm

Wind Rush Farm youth have the opportunity to participate in therapeutic horseback riding under the close supervision of therapeutic horse trainers at Wind Rush Farm in Topsfield. Cornerstones youth have enjoyed this unique opportunity for many years. The staff at Wind Rush Farm is well renown for their work with a wide variety of special needs participants and children. Children experience the thrill of horseback riding and mastering new skills. They also learn to care for the animals and treat them with kindness and respect.

North Star Adventure

North Star Adventure is a specialized program within Health and Education Services that provides experiential adventure programming to mainstream and special needs students in elementary through high school settings. Adventure activities include low and high ropes course challenges, new games, camping, canoeing, swimming and non-competitive physical activities that build positive peer interaction and problem solving skills. Youth learn to be comfortable with their bodies and with setting personal challenge goals in the context of supervised activities led by a well-trained adventure staff.

Art & Music Therapy

Art and music are therapeutic activities built into the weekly school schedule. Masters level art and music therapists run small group activities during the school day that introduce students to their creative talents. These activities can be healing as well as introduce youth to new forms of non-verbal communication where they can master the basic skills and disciplines associated with the expressive arts.

Family Outreach

A full-time family outreach worker is available to offer assistance, support and resource networking to families seeking help with parenting their child. The outreach worker may link families to needed community support systems or offer support and coaching to parents stressed by their child's behavior and fresh out of ideas about what to do next. Family outreach becomes more intensive for families with a child transitioning home after placement. Support services can continue for several months after discharge.

Psychiatric Evaluation

A board certified child psychiatrist attends to residents in the program each week to review their health plans, medication regiments and assure that youth needing psychiatric medication receive the optimal balance between medication benefits and any associated risks. The consultant psychiatrist is available to consult with parents, explain medications and get proper authorization to administer medications. The consultant psychiatrist also performs mental status evaluations, participates in multi-disciplinary treatment plan reviews and has input in risk management and disposition decisions.
